Toyota Safety Sense

Now Featuring Toyota Safety SenseTM 2.5+

Toyota believes that no matter the destination, everyone deserves to arrive safely. That’s why Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) is standard on virtually all Toyota models. TSS is an advanced suite of active safety designed to support driver awareness, decision making, and vehicle operation over a wide range of speeds.

Crash protection starts with crash prevention. Packaged together in an integrated system, TSS helps address three key areas of accident protection: preventing or mitigating frontal collisions, keeping drivers within their lane, and enhancing road safety during night-time driving.

Integrated Technologies

TSS Parking

Parking: Take the guesswork out of backing in and backing up, thanks to a number of technologies that increase your field of vision. We’ve developed Backup Cameras with Guidelines for backing into parking spaces, a Rear Cross Traffic Alert* system that warns of approaching vehicles when backing up, and Intelligent Parking Assist that can park a vehicle virtually unassisted.

Toyota Safety Sense Active Safety

Active Safety: Active safety technologies are designed to help when the unexpected happens. Blind Spot Monitor** and Lane Keep Assist issue alerts to warn you of hidden danger. Traction Control helps you safely traverse wet, icy, loose or uneven surfaces. Vehicle Stability Control helps prevent wheel slip by reducing engine power and applying necessary brake force automatically. Anti-lock Brakes prevent wheel lock during a sudden stop by applying “pulsing” brake pressure. Electronic Brakeforce Distribution enhances stability while braking, while Brake Assist detects sudden braking and adds full pressure to prevent a collision. Some technologies, like Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, are so advanced that they can anticipate your intentions and then automatically activate a variety of safety systems to ensure the highest possible level of vehicle control and stability.

Automatic High Beams

Designed to detect oncoming and preceding vehicles’ lights and depending upon the circumstances, Automatic High Beam (AHB) can switch between high and low beams for you.

Toyota Safety Sense Passive Safety

Passive Safety: From airbags to seat belts to impact-absorbing body structures that channel impact energy away from the cabin, Toyota vehicles are loaded with passive safety measures. We’ve even specially designed our headrests and driver and front passenger seats to help reduce impact effects such as whiplash.

Toyota Safety Sense Pre-Crash

Pre-Crash Safety: Sometimes accidents are unavoidable, but we've developed technologies that can predict the likelihood of a collision, take steps to reduce damage and injury, and in some situations, help avoid an accident altogether. Pre-Collision System*** warns when an obstacle is detected by radar, then automatically apply brakes to reduce the severity of impact and tighten seatbelts to help protect occupants.

New Features in Safety Sense 2.0 – Adds The Following –

Provides collision avoidance or collision mitigation support in speed ranges where frontal collisions are likely to occur. For TSS 2.0, PCS is designed to detect bicycles in daytime situations, as well as vehicles and pedestrians in both daytime and low-light situations - helping to prevent or mitigate a collision.

Toyota Safety Sense Active Safety

LDA (Lane Departure Alert) Alerts you if you start to drift out of your lane when travelling on relatively straight roads with clear lane markings, and new for TSS 2.0 - it can detect some road edges and curbs. The Steering Assist function may also provide small corrective steering inputs.

Lane Trace Assist

LTA is designed to work with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to keep the vehicle centered in its visibly marked lane and preemptively avoid unintended lane departures.

DRCC can automatically adjust vehicle speed to help maintain a preset following distance between you and the vehicle directly in front of you. Most TSS 2.0 models will feature Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which is designed to allow low-speed following, speed matching, stopping, and acceleration/deceleration to a preceding vehicle. Manual transmission models receive high-speed range DRCC instead of Full-Speed Range DRCC.
